Egg Coffee – a taste of elegance and where to find it in Saigon

Coffee shop is everywhere in Vietnam. It is an undoubted fact that this city is really crazy about coffee. French colonists initially introduced coffee to Vietnam, but the Vietnamese have perfectly made it their own with the signature Egg Coffee. Yes! I know it might seem there is no way these two ingredients go well together. But yeah, Vietnamese totally nailed it.

The birth of Vietnamese Egg Coffee

Why coffee and egg? Take a look back at 1946 when the very first cup of Egg Coffee was created by Giang Nguyen – a bartender at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel in Ha Noi. During the French War at that time, there was a serious shortage of fresh milk. So instead of using milk to make coffee, he replaced it with whisked egg yolk. And now, everyone knows how the rest of the story goes.

Mr. Giang Nguyen later founded Giang Cafe, which is so famous that attracts both locals and tourists buzzing around. It is now managed by his son. So if you’re ever in Ha Noi, don’t forget to come and have a sip of this signature cup from this brand.

Benefits of Egg Coffee

Adding an egg into your coffee can be both delicious and good for your health. A cup of coffee is the best way to start a day. Coffee has been proven to give an energy boost and help people feel less tired. Now you have an egg in your drink, let’s see what happens. Both the white and yolk of an egg are rich in nutrients such as protein, minerals, carotenoids and vitamins, including fat-soluble vitamins A, B, D…. However, drinking raw egg could cause significant danger since some are contaminated by the bacteria salmonella.

Raw egg in coffee, on the other hand, is safe, as the heat of the liquid brings the temperature up enough to kill the bacteria, which makes it safe to consume.

Thanks to the combination of egg and coffee, starting your day with this drink also keeps you full for longer – good news for those who want to speed up their weight loss.

So, how does Egg Coffee taste?

Its flavors will make you want to hop on the plane straight to Vietnam. Many tourists agree that egg coffee is such a bomb. A velvety thick mixture of whisked egg yolk, sweetened condensed milk and butter is poured over Vietnamese super strong coffee. All you have to do is just whip it together and enjoy this unique drink. The taste, how I can say, is like a sweet, slightly bitter, creamy and delicate dessert that served in luxurious restaurants. Well, to put in a nutshell, it tastes like heaven.
