History of An Dong Market

An Dong Market is one of the biggest market in Vietnam with 3 separate areas: Food Market, the old An Dong Market and An Dong Plaza. Located in District 5, market was opened at the end of 1951. But it was not until 1954 that the market was officially set up. At that time, people were developing their business. Thanks to the help of the former government, they were opening more and more stalls along. An Dong Market is well-known for its fashion goods. You can find a wide range of clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories. If you are a handicraft lover, the top floor is exactly where you should stick around.

Since An Dong Market still reflects the real charm of Saigon markets, it’s a great place to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the local daily life.

Things to buy when shopping at An Dong Market

There is a lot of stuff that you can see in the market. Some of the most popular goods at An Dong Market include woodwork, lacquer and knitwear.

Food court can be found on the ground floor. There are several kiosks selling traditional food, dessert, sweets and also dried fruits. Fill yourself up with some delicious dishes such as pho, hu tiu, banh xeo. Don’t miss out on “chè” – a traditional Vietnamese sweet dessert. Varieties of Chè are made with mungs bean, black pea, jelly, seasonal fresh chopped fruits and coconut milk. Believe me, a cup of chè with ice is all you wish for after a quiet time strolling along narrow aisles in the market.

An Dong Market is about 4km away from Ben Thanh Market. You can choose one of these types of transport to get there:

• Motorbike: It’s the fastest way to reach the market. The price is about 25.000 VND – 40.000 VND in 10 – 15 minutes.
• Taxi: Taking a taxi costs approximately 50.000VND. Booking by Grab/Go Viet App will help you know exactly the amount that you have to pay.
• Bus: Taking a bus is super cheap. It just costs 5.000VND. You should get on bus on route #11 from Ben Thanh Station and get off at the An Dong Bus Stop.

Knowing a little basic Vietnamese will make your trip more meaningful. You have to communicate with the local people a lot in the market. But all the local market traders don’t know how to speak English. You should use Google Translator to communicate and don’t worry, most of the store owners are really friendly.
